Children's Books

Querer Muito

This book was written by the late João Paulo Cotrim, charismatic figure and head of the publishing house Abysmo. In his sensational loose style, full of poetry and magic, he takes us on a trip through a universe of little mundane things, through the eyes of a child. I dare say, his rebellious and forever unsatisfied inner child. It starts with question: Why do they give me this when all I want is that. Couldn't ask for a better premisse to create whimsical images full of meaning. Also this book was created as fundraiser for APCC which is an association that helps and cares for children in need.

Why do they give me this when all I want is that?
Why do they give me letters when all I want are books?
Why do they give me books when all I want are toys?
Why do they give me toys when all I want are beasts?
Why do they give me beasts when all I want are daisies?
Why do they give me daisies when all I want is the sun?
Why do they give me the sun when all I want is water?
Why do they give me water when all I want is a boat?
Why do they give me water when all I want is dirt?
Why do they give me dirt when all I want is the sky?
Why do they give me the sky when all I want is the color blue?
Why do they give me the color blue when all I want is the wind?
Why do they give me the wind when all I want is a kiss?
Why do they give me a kiss when all I want is a nest?
Why do they give me a nest when all I want is a special thing?
Why do they give me a special thing when all I want is everything?

Fora de Série

This illustrations are part of an agenda that promotes the shows and concerts for children at Casa da Música in Porto. My approach was to make the characters that illustrate each section, colourful and engaging.

Buh!

These illustration were part of s solo show at Ó! Gallery in Porto. As I could decide what I wanted to create I tried to see how far I could go with mixing illustration and comics. I was also interested in juxtaposing colours and narratives. The final pieces were all series of twenty silkscreened in two or three colours.

The Cabinet of Curiosities

This started as my thesis show at School of Visual Arts Master's program: Illustration as a Visual Essay. David Sandlin was the teacher and curator of the show and this had a huge influence on the way I see and explore visual narratives. To look into the visual arts not only in its linear form but as a fluid life form. All the objects tell a story as people do. Most of them started as scrap or found material that in time were sown together to create this ever-growing cabinet of curiosities. It travelled quite a bit, from the United States, to Italy, Spain and Portugal in different setups. It is an ongoing project. If you would like to have it on your gallery or event, please send me an e-mail.

In the beginning there were two cases, but evidences whatsoever.

Elephant in a China Shop

This book was made in a joined venture between the publishing house Tcharan and Vista Alegre, a household name in the porcelain business. We all know the story of the bull in a china shop, but this one has a twist, the narrative is based on a rumour that is spreading through china shop. This led us to make an accordion style book so, as the narrative evolves you unveil all the characters until you reach the elephant. I kind of works like and panoramic animation.

AlphabetZ

This was one of my first book projects at the School of Visual Art's Master's program: Illustration as a Visual Essay. I was one of the lucky ones to learn from the likes of Marshal Arisman, David Sandman or Victor Koen. In this particular project we had to come up with a nonsense text in Writing Class and then illustrate it in order to give it sense. For me it was about learning rhythm and composition.

Two tales that didn’t make it

The illustrations of this book were made in 2007 and were never published. The author didn't fancy the illustrations judging them too abstract for children, so the publisher had to cancel the project as it was going to print. Interestingly enough, the illustrations were later awarded by The Society of Illustrators of New York and were art of their book show.
